Casa Guatemala

Casa Guatemala is an orphanage with facilities in Guatemala city and a larger children’s village on the banks of the Rio Dulce in Eastern Guatemala. The children’s village had been recently devastated by hurricane Mitch in Oct 1998, then an earthquake in July 1999 which knocked down the main dormitory facilities, kitchen/dining building, farm buildings and water supply. In 1999-2000 Dave MacKenzie and Mark Kerschbaumer traveled to the Rio Dulce to oversee the reconstruction of several buildings on behalf of a prime supporter of the organization, Lennox McNeely. Dave and Mark spent 7 months at the orphanage designing and building a new boys dormitory on the waterfront, the new cafeteria, and assisting with numerous other projects such as a concrete water tower, medical clinic, and teachers residence.
